Solutions for 382-high Trust Tower in Abu Dhabi Bags Global Award

An innovative sun-tracking and integrated lighting management system implemented by Bahri & Mazroei Technical Systems (BMTS) in the 382 meter-high Trust Tower within the World Trade Centre Development (WTCD) – Abu Dhabi project, has won the global DALI Application Award for the year 2014. Mr. Esam R. Al Mazroei- Managing Director of the Bahri & Mazroei Group, received the coveted international award from Gordon Routledge, a jury member of DALI Award, at Light+Building Exhibition – the world’s largest trade fair for lighting and building solutions, held at Messe Frankfurt in Germany.

DALI is the global standard for professional digital lighting and lighting control system seamlessly linking different manufacturers thereby creating highest benchmark for energy savings, occupancy comfort, compatibility and flexibility. Specified by the International Electro-technical Commission, the standardized worldwide DALI test system delivers unparalleled performance, easy installation/maintenance, maximum control/flexibility for building owners to achieve highest energy saving and optimal life cycle cost. Tailor-made for modern lighting solutions, DALI offers easy planning, lower costs and interoperability. It is the most flexible and reliable control system for innovative lighting solutions.

The award is recognition of the Middle East’s largest-of-its-kind innovative lighting system designed, supplied and installed by BMTS at the Trust Tower. The project, leading by innovation in the region’s lighting solutions industry aimed to harvesting solar energy and maximizing the use of natural light within the infrastructure.

Receiving the award at the global trade exhibition, Mr. Al Mazroei, said, “It is a great feeling to bring the global industry award to the Middle East region through our innovative and sustainable lighting solutions at the redevelopment of Abu Dhabi Central Market, the ambitious Abu Dhabi World Trade Centre Development. This is not the end for sure and we will get more global awards in the future.”

“The award jury considered the uniqueness of the project and Dali applications for selecting BMTS for the recognition. We focused towards energy efficiency aspects and environment-friendly green values, energy conservation and sustainability measures. The project was a mix of different Dali technology components as an effective Dali-based system. The overall value has been due to combination of scale, end-user benefits and complexity,” he added.

Mr. Sivakumar Subramanian, General Manager of BMTS, further said, “The award echoes Bahri & Mazroei’s position as the market leader in its businesses involved in life safety, building-home automation, power solutions, security and audio-video solutions. Every project has its own unique requirements and challenges in terms of providing the lighting solutions. At the WTCD project, the requirement was very clear since the inception, which was single interoperable global protocol for control, monitoring and optimization of illumination along with central software for optimal asset management and energy management.”

“The BMTS system for WTCD will have different lighting scenes inside and outside the building, in addition to the installation of the sun-tracking program with the integrated lighting control system which will allow maximum natural light inside the building to save energy. Using this method, the building requires less artificial lighting and saves around 20 to 25 per cent in terms of electricity consumption,” he added.

BMTS has installed over 60,000 DALI points and over 36,000 DALI Light Fittings and more than 5,000 Blind motors on this project. BMTS, in partnership with Helvar, developed an algorithm that would provide data on sun movement across the building every day. This data was used by Helvar routers to control the building blinds. So that the lights are automatically dimmed or their intensity increased to match user requirements. A new set of software was also developed to get the required  positions to achieve the sun-tracking system.

BMTS, an entity of the Bahri & Mazroei Group- the leading solutions provider in the Gulf catering to building and infra-development segments, is one of the first companies in the Gulf region to win the prestigious international DALI Award.

According to Mr. Al Mazroei, the UAE has in recent years drawn attention for its innovative renewable energy building projects. Integrating various value-added systems is the future of the construction and infra-development segments in the region.

The Bahri and Mazroei Group is a one-stop-shop for a range of value-added solutions for all categories of buildings and infrastructure development projects.
